The Work Behind the Birds

Welcome to High Acres Indio!

We are Heather and Chase, and together with our three daughters, we own and operate our family farm in the high country of western New Mexico. Our farm is truly a family effort. Our youngest girls especially love helping collect eggs, care for chicks, and spend time with the birds. Raising poultry has become a big part of our family’s life, and everything we have built has taken years of hard work, sacrifice, and determination.

Our journey with chickens began in 2013. Over the years, we raised and learned about different breeds, gaining valuable experience with poultry care, hatching, breeding, and flock management. In 2021, we began raising Indio Gigantes and quickly fell in love with the breed. We were originally drawn to their impressive appearance, incredible height, and rarity. Their unique qualities inspired us to focus more seriously on developing a strong and carefully selected breeding program.

In 2023, we made one of the biggest changes our family and farm had ever faced. We relocated our entire operation more than 180 miles to a new property. Moving our birds, equipment, supplies, and the many pieces of a working farm was not easy. It took blood, sweat, tears, and a lot of patience, but we believed the move would give us more opportunities to grow and improve our program.

We are still building and expanding today. New pens, housing, fencing, and other infrastructure are constantly being added or improved to better serve the needs of our birds. A farm is never truly finished, and we are always looking for ways to create a healthier, safer, and more comfortable environment for our flock.

One of the things that makes High Acres Indio unique is our high-altitude location. Our birds are raised in the open country of western New Mexico, where they experience a dry climate, fresh air, and changing seasonal conditions. We believe raising birds in this environment helps us develop a strong and hardy flock.

Our Indio Gigante program includes bloodlines from some of the most respected and established breeders in the United States. We carefully consider our pairings and continually evaluate each generation. Our breeding goals include improving height, structure, health, strength, and overall breed quality while maintaining the distinctive appearance that first made us love the Indio Gigante.

We do not breed simply to produce more birds. We breed with purpose. Each generation gives us the opportunity to learn, make better selections, and continue improving our program. We understand that meaningful progress takes time, patience, and honesty, and we are committed to doing the work required.

Customer service is also extremely important to us. We want our customers to feel comfortable asking questions before and after their purchase. Whether someone is purchasing their first hatching eggs, adding birds to an established flock, or beginning their own Indio Gigante journey, we are happy to share our experience and offer support whenever possible. We value clear communication and want every customer to feel confident working with our farm.

Chase is an Army veteran, and the dedication, discipline, and persistence developed through his military service continue to play an important role in our farm. Those values can be seen in the way we care for our birds, improve our facilities, and continue pushing forward even when farm life becomes difficult.

High Acres Indio has been built by our family through years of work, learning, setbacks, and progress. We are proud of how far we have come, but we are even more excited about where we are going. Thank you for supporting our farm, our family, and our passion for the Indio Gigante breed.
